The Walls of Kier Fortress
That day as with every other day the sun beat down, relentless, upon the blood-soaked earth. At dawn, the Royal Army had resumed their assault on Kier Fortress. Colonel Spencer Dolstoy of the Helios Knights looked down on the attackers and yawned widely.
âHow many times have they attacked at dawn now?â
âThis will be the seventeenth, ser.â
âTheyâre so tenacious Iâve circled back around from scorn to admiration. Who knew the Royal Army were such early risers?â Spencerâs voice dripped with sarcasm, tears of mirth in his eyes. His close advisor Major Nileâs face twisted in a half smile.
âI canât think of better comedy than watching them break their swords on the walls of the fortress they built.â
âNile, I could not agree more.â Spencer laughed aloud, then in the corner of his eye, he spotted a few Crimson Knights fitting arrows to their bowstrings. âSpeed that up!â he bellowed. âDo you think this is a game?â
One of the soldiers in crimson armor stopped shooting, looking openly disgruntled. The others all followed suit.
âI didnât hear an order to stop shooting!â Spencer continued.
âColonel Spencer, Iâll ask you to stop there. Defense of this section of the wall falls to the Crimson Knights.â This unwanted interruption came from Colonel Raza of the Crimson Knights. He was an old man, far past his prime, barely able to walk without his cane. Spencer couldnât for the life of him understand why Rosenmarie continued to employ such a useless old man.
âWell, well, well. If it isnât Colonel Raza,â he exclaimed. âIt must have been an arduous journey, climbing the walls as a man of your years. Iâm sure itâll be beyond me when Iâm your age.â
Despite his sneering tone, the other manâs face didnât twitch. âYou will cease these arbitrary insults to the Crimson Knights.â
âArbitrary?â
âOh, was it not? It certainly looked that way to me.â
âAs if you know what anything looks like when you can barely keep your eyes open. Best leave off the jokes, old man, youâll only embarrass us all.â
Raza peered at Spencer for a moment, then said, âWith that face like a troll in a storybook, youâre doing that just fine yourself.â
âSo eager to give up what little life youâve got left?â
âSounds like a grand old time. But thatâs enough.â
âExcuse me?â Spencer spun around, bristling with irritation, only to find himself looking into the frowning face of chief of staff, Major General Oscar Remnand.
